Peer-to-peer car sharing · Westchester County

Car sharing in Westchester County

Levy is a peer-to-peer car-sharing marketplace for Westchester County. Owners list their cars, and drivers rent them for day trips up the Hudson, airport runs, and errands the train does not reach. Hosts can create draft listings now. Bookings open when the marketplace launches.

Why it fits

Why car sharing works in Westchester County

For drivers

Westchester runs on both rail and road. In 2024 Census survey data, 13.1% of the county's households had no vehicle and 20.6% of commuters took public transit (Census data via Census Reporter). Metro-North handles the trip to Manhattan; a car handles hikes, big shopping runs, and towns the train does not serve.

Visitors arriving at HPN or by train can pick up a car from a local owner instead of a rental counter.

For hosts

If you ride Metro-North to work, your car may sit at home or at a station lot most weekdays. List those hours, or only weekends, and close the calendar whenever you need the car.

Rail riders and visitors pass through the county every day. The MTA calls White Plains the third-largest Metro-North station (MTA), and a host near a busy station can offer pickup a short walk from the platform.

Arrival and pickup

Getting to a car in Westchester County

Airports

Westchester County Airport (HPN)

County-owned and about 30 miles north of Manhattan, on land in Harrison, North Castle, and Rye Brook (Westchester County). American, BermudAir, Breeze, Delta, and JetBlue fly there (airline information). Bee-Line Route 12 runs daily to the White Plains TransCenter and its Metro-North station (public transit); the fare has been $3.00 since January 4, 2026 (Bee-Line).

LaGuardia and JFK

Both are in Queens. From Westchester the drive runs through the Bronx and over a cashless MTA crossing such as the Bronx-Whitestone or Throgs Neck bridge, where a car pays $7.46 with a New York E-ZPass (MTA).

Rail and transit

Harlem Line

White Plains, North White Plains, Valhalla, Pleasantville, Mount Kisco, Katonah, and more through the middle of the county (MTA line maps).

Hudson Line

Yonkers, Tarrytown, Croton-Harmon, and Peekskill along the river.

New Haven Line

New Rochelle, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Harrison, Rye, and Port Chester along the Sound.

Amtrak

Empire Service stops at Yonkers and Croton-Harmon (Amtrak); the Northeast Regional stops at New Rochelle (Amtrak).

Practical pickup areas

White Plains TransCenter

The Metro-North station and the bus from HPN meet here, which makes it a natural handoff area for travelers.

Croton-Harmon

Hudson Line and Amtrak trains stop here. The village runs the station lot and sells daily parking at $15 per weekday or $9 per weekend day (Village of Croton-on-Hudson), so a host who leaves a car there should tell the driver who pays for the spot.

Home driveways

Hosts can list from home. On a connected car, the driver unlocks with the app at the scheduled time, with no one waiting in the driveway.

FAQ

Car sharing in Westchester County: common questions

More answers for hosts and drivers are on the New York car sharing FAQ.

When will Westchester cars be ready to rent?

Bookings are not open yet. Hosts can set up listings now, and cars become bookable at launch. Sign up to get an email when Westchester opens.

Who pays the Cuomo Bridge toll on a shared car?

The bridge bills the car's E-ZPass, or mails a bill to the registered owner, for southbound trips. Levy matches tolls to trips automatically, so the driver pays for tolls on their trip and the host is not left with the bill.

Can I pick up a car near the White Plains Metro-North station?

If a host offers pickup there. Each listing will show its pickup area. White Plains is also where Bee-Line Route 12 from Westchester County Airport arrives.

Can I drive a shared car on the Taconic or the Hutchinson River Parkway?

In a passenger car, yes. Commercial vehicles are banned on those parkways, so if a listing is a van or a truck on commercial plates, use the Thruway or an interstate instead.

Can I leave my car at the Croton-Harmon station lot for a driver?

You can, at the village's daily rate of $15 on weekdays and $9 on weekends. For longer gaps, pickup from home is simpler and free.

New York notices

NOTICE: New York State Law prohibits the following practices by peer-to-peer car sharing program administrators based upon race, color, ethnic origin, religion, disability, sex, marital status, residence or geographic location, income, sexual orientation, genetic predisposition or age: (1) refusal to allow participation in a peer-to-peer car sharing program; and (2) the imposition of any additional charge (except in certain instances where the shared vehicle driver is under the age of 25). In addition, it is unlawful for any peer-to-peer car sharing program administrator to refuse to allow participation in the program to any person solely on the requirement of ownership of a credit card.

Leased or financed car?

If your vehicle is leased or financed, you may need more insurance. If your vehicle is subject to a lease or loan, you may need additional insurance coverage, including motor vehicle physical damage coverage (collision and comprehensive), to share it through Levy. Check your lease or loan agreement and ask your insurer. For insurance questions, contact the New York State Department of Financial Services: (800) 342-3736, www.dfs.ny.gov.
