Peer-to-peer car sharing · Long Island

Car sharing on Long Island, from Nassau to the East End

Levy is a peer-to-peer car-sharing marketplace for Long Island. Owners in Nassau and Suffolk list their cars, and drivers rent them for beach days, East End weekends, ferry trips, and airport runs. Hosts can create a draft listing now. Bookings open when the marketplace launches.

Why it fits

Why car sharing works in Long Island

For drivers

Long Island is built around the car. In 2024 Census survey data, 61.1% of Nassau commuters and 71.9% of Suffolk commuters drove alone to work (Census data via Census Reporter). Beaches, wineries, and ferry docks are far easier to reach with a car.

The LIRR runs 11 branches out to Montauk, so a train-plus-car trip works: ride out, then pick up a car near your station.

For hosts

Beach season and summer weekends are when visitors head east. Keep weekdays for your commute and open those weekends, or any mix you like.

If your car lives in a driveway or a private lot, handoff is simple. On a connected car, the driver unlocks with the app at the time you set, so you do not need to be home.

Arrival and pickup

Getting to a car in Long Island

Airports

Long Island MacArthur (ISP)

Owned and run by the Town of Islip in Ronkonkoma, about 50 miles from New York City (Town of Islip). Avelo, Breeze, Cape Air, Frontier, JetBlue, and Southwest fly nonstop to 16 destinations (MacArthur Airport). The LIRR's Ronkonkoma station is just north of the airport; taxis, ride-hail, and Suffolk County Transit Route 6 connect them (ground transportation).

JFK and LaGuardia

Both are in Queens. The LIRR connects to AirTrain JFK at Jamaica (MTA) and to the free Q70 LaGuardia bus at Woodside (MTA).

Rail and transit

Main Line and Ronkonkoma Branch

Runs through Mineola, Hicksville, and Ronkonkoma, with limited service on to Riverhead and Greenport on the North Fork (MTA line maps).

Montauk Branch

Babylon, Bay Shore, Sayville, Patchogue, the Hamptons, and Montauk. Riders to Grand Central change at Jamaica or Babylon.

Port Jefferson Branch

Electric through Hicksville to Huntington, then diesel east to Port Jefferson (MTA).

Practical pickup areas

Major LIRR stops

Hicksville, Mineola, Ronkonkoma, and Babylon are major stops and natural meeting points for drivers coming from the city.

Ferry towns

Bay Shore, Sayville, and Patchogue each have an LIRR station and a Fire Island ferry terminal (National Park Service). A car gets you to the dock; driving on Fire Island itself is limited to permit holders (NPS).

Near MacArthur Airport

Hosts in Ronkonkoma, Islip, or Bohemia can serve travelers flying into ISP.

The park calls itself the public's gateway to Fire Island. From Field 5, a three-quarter-mile walk reaches the lighthouse (NY State Parks).

The lighthouse at Montauk Point State Park is the oldest in New York State, commissioned under President George Washington in 1792 (NY State Parks).

Local driving notes

Rules change. Check the linked official sources before a trip.

Parkways are for cars only

Commercial vehicles are banned from the state parkways, including the Northern State, Southern State, Meadowbrook, Wantagh, and Sagtikos, where some stone bridges are as low as 6 feet 11 inches (NYSDOT).

Tolls into the city

The Throgs Neck, Bronx-Whitestone, and RFK bridges and the Queens-Midtown Tunnel are cashless; a car pays $7.46 with a New York E-ZPass and $12.03 by mail (MTA). Manhattan at or below 60th Street adds a $9 peak congestion toll (MTA).

Town beach rules

Town beaches can charge non-residents far more, or require a resident in the car. Hempstead charges $12 per car for residents and $55 for non-residents in season at Point Lookout and Lido (Town of Hempstead), and a Tobay Beach day pass requires an Oyster Bay resident in the car (Town of Oyster Bay).

A toll bridge on the island

Long Island has few tolls of its own; the Atlantic Beach Bridge in Nassau charges cars $3 with E-ZPass (Nassau County Bridge Authority).

Storm season

Hurricane season runs June through November (Nassau County), and Suffolk has an address lookup for storm surge zones (Suffolk County). Hosts can block dates when a storm is forecast.

FAQ

Car sharing in Long Island: common questions

More answers for hosts and drivers are on the New York car sharing FAQ.

When can I rent a car from a Long Island host?

Bookings are not open yet. Hosts can set up listings now, and cars become bookable at launch. Sign up and we will email you.

Can I pick up a car near an LIRR station?

Hosts choose the pickup spot, and a host near a station such as Hicksville or Ronkonkoma can set pickup there.

How are tolls handled when I drive a shared car into the city?

MTA crossings bill the car's E-ZPass or mail a bill to the registered owner. Levy matches tolls to trips automatically, so the driver pays their trip's tolls.

Can I use a town beach on Long Island in a shared car?

State parks such as Jones Beach charge a per-car fee anyone can pay. Town beaches set their own rules: Hempstead charges non-residents $55 a day in season, and Tobay requires an Oyster Bay resident in the car.

Do I need a car on Fire Island?

Generally no. Most visitors take a ferry from Bay Shore, Sayville, or Patchogue, and driving on the island is limited to permit holders. A shared car gets you to the dock and home.

Levy is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Turo. Turo is a trademark of its owner. Tolls, parking rules, and park reservations change; confirm with the official source before you drive.

New York notices

NOTICE: New York State Law prohibits the following practices by peer-to-peer car sharing program administrators based upon race, color, ethnic origin, religion, disability, sex, marital status, residence or geographic location, income, sexual orientation, genetic predisposition or age: (1) refusal to allow participation in a peer-to-peer car sharing program; and (2) the imposition of any additional charge (except in certain instances where the shared vehicle driver is under the age of 25). In addition, it is unlawful for any peer-to-peer car sharing program administrator to refuse to allow participation in the program to any person solely on the requirement of ownership of a credit card.

Leased or financed car?

If your vehicle is leased or financed, you may need more insurance. If your vehicle is subject to a lease or loan, you may need additional insurance coverage, including motor vehicle physical damage coverage (collision and comprehensive), to share it through Levy. Check your lease or loan agreement and ask your insurer. For insurance questions, contact the New York State Department of Financial Services: (800) 342-3736, www.dfs.ny.gov.
