Levy Fleets vs Getaround
Getaround wound down its US marketplace in February 2025 and took HyreCar with it. If you have cars sitting with dead Connect hardware in them, this page is about what to run them on next.
Wind-down announced February 11–12, 2025; future bookings cancelled
The highest take rate in US peer-to-peer car sharing
Of car-sharing revenue on your own direct bookings
Smartcar/OEM needs nothing installed on compatible model years

The subscription that kept charging whether the car moved or not
The structural problem with Getaround’s model was not the 40% commission on its own — it was that the commission sat on top of a per-vehicle hardware subscription owed regardless of rental activity. A 10-car host paid roughly $200/month in Connect fees before a single booking, then gave up about 40 cents of every dollar earned. Levy’s car-sharing plan has no per-vehicle hardware subscription and no platform minimum: 8% of car-sharing revenue, and nothing when the fleet is idle. Guestpass access plans are separate and start at $29/month.

| Category | Levy Fleets | Getaround |
|---|---|---|
| Platform Status & Risk | ||
| US availability | Operating | US marketplace wound down February 2025; European operations continue in six countries |
| What happens to your fleet if the vendor exits | Booking page, customer list, vehicle records, and access configuration are yours and exportable | US hosts lost demand, booking system, and working keyless hardware simultaneously |
| Hardware dependency | None required on OEM-compatible vehicles; access path configured per vehicle | Getaround Connect was mandatory on every listed vehicle and is now inert in the US |
| Notice given to hosts | Not applicable — Levy is not the demand channel | New rentals stopped the day after the announcement; future bookings cancelled |
| Channel concentration | Direct channel designed to run alongside marketplaces, not instead of them | Demand, payments, insurance, hardware, and policy all came from one company |
| Economics | ||
| Commission | 8% of car-sharing revenue on direct bookings | Historically ~40% of trip revenue — the steepest in US peer-to-peer |
| Per-vehicle recurring hardware fee | None | Connect subscription from ~$20/vehicle/mo, owed whether or not the car rented |
| Hardware setup cost | $0 on OEM-compatible vehicles | ~$99 one-time per vehicle for the Connect device and install |
| Cost when the fleet is idle | $0 on the revenue-share plan | Connect subscription continued regardless of bookings |
| Setup fee | $0 | Per-vehicle Connect install fee |
| Who supplied demand | You do — Levy provides the channel, not the traffic | Getaround did, until it stopped |
| Vehicle Access & Keyless | ||
| Keyless approach | Configurable per vehicle: Smartcar/OEM, Uconnect, Linka, or supported hardware | Single proprietary device, mandatory on every vehicle |
| Works with no hardware installed | Yes, on most 2016-and-newer vehicles via the OEM API | No — Connect installation was required to list |
| Guest access controls | Phone OTP, device-binding signals, host ID gate, trip window, post-trip lock grace | App-based unlock inside the booked trip window |
| Failed-unlock fallback | Fallback instructions surfaced to the guest plus provider response and audit trail for the host | Marketplace support handled access failures |
| Immobilization and telemetry | Live GPS, telemetry, and remote commands through the configured provider | GPS and immobilization through Connect — genuinely capable while it operated |
| Operations & Ownership | ||
| Who owns the customer | You — rider records and repeat business are yours | The marketplace did, and those relationships did not survive the wind-down |
| Data export | Customer, booking, and vehicle data export from Levy | Hosts had limited ability to carry their business elsewhere |
| Condition reports and damage | Structured pre/post-trip condition reports, AI damage detection, and a review queue requiring an outcome | Trip photos and marketplace-run claims adjudication |
| Mixed fleets | Cars plus scooters, bikes, mopeds, golf carts, and LSVs on one dashboard | Cars only |
| Insurance | Levy Cover binds per-trip coverage on P2P car trips with subaccount opt-in; otherwise your own commercial policy | Bundled protection on every trip, which was a real convenience |
| Gig-driver rental segment | Long-term and subscription rental supported through the rental and subscription modules | Served via HyreCar until that also closed in February 2025 |
What the commission difference recovers
Getaround’s roughly 40% take was the steepest in the category. These figures compare that historic rate against Levy’s 8% on direct bookings, at the same gross revenue.
This is a like-for-like commission comparison at equal gross revenue and deliberately excludes the hardest part: Getaround supplied demand, and a direct channel does not. Budget for marketing, and expect the direct channel to ramp rather than replace marketplace volume overnight. Connect subscription savings of roughly $20/vehicle/month are on top of the figures shown.

When to Choose Each Platform
Choose Levy Fleets if you...
- You are a former US Getaround host with vehicles sitting idle and dead Connect hardware installed
- You want a vehicle access layer that is not tied to one company’s continued existence
- You want keyless handoff without installing proprietary hardware in every car
- You want to keep 92% of direct booking revenue instead of roughly 60% of marketplace revenue
- You want your customer list and booking history to be portable
- You want a direct channel that survives whatever the next marketplace decides
- Your fleet includes scooters, bikes, mopeds, or golf carts alongside cars
Choose Getaround if you...
- You operate in Norway, Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, or Austria, where Getaround still runs
- You want a large established European audience and bundled trip protection more than channel control
- You prefer a single vendor supplying hardware, insurance, payments, and demand together
Why Operators Choose Levy Over Getaround
Levy is software you own the relationship with — there is no marketplace that can close and take your channel with it
8% of car-sharing revenue on direct bookings versus the roughly 40% Getaround took
No proprietary hardware lock-in: Smartcar/OEM works on compatible model years with nothing installed
Where hardware is needed, it is not tied to a single company’s survival — the vehicle access layer is configurable
Your customer list, booking history, and vehicle data are yours and exportable
Cars run alongside scooters, bikes, mopeds, and golf carts on one dashboard
Getting a stranded fleet earning again
Former Getaround hosts usually have three problems at once: no demand channel, no booking system, and dead hardware. They are worth solving in that order.
Re-establish demand first
List on Turo if you are not already — it is the only US P2P marketplace operating at scale, and cash flow matters more than channel independence while you rebuild. Treat this as the bridge, not the destination.
Connect the vehicles to Levy
Add the fleet and configure the access path per vehicle. Most 2016-and-newer cars connect through Smartcar/OEM with nothing installed. The old Connect units can be left in place or removed at your convenience; they are not part of the new path.
Stand up the direct channel
Configure your rates, mileage rules, deposits, rental agreement, and ID requirements, then turn on Guestpass for remote handoff. Point repeat renters, referrals, and any local corporate or insurance-replacement work at the direct channel so the next platform decision is never made for you.

About Getaround
Getaround built the connected car sharing model that everyone else copied: proprietary in-car hardware called Getaround Connect, keyless entry for guests, and a marketplace layered on top. It also acquired HyreCar in 2023 to own the gig-driver rental segment. Then on February 11–12, 2025 the company announced an orderly wind-down of its entire US operation, citing an ongoing lack of liquidity. New US rentals stopped immediately, future bookings were cancelled, US staff were laid off, and HyreCar closed with it. Getaround continues to operate in six European countries — Norway, Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, and Austria. If you are reading this as a former US host, the practical question is no longer which marketplace to pick; it is what to do with vehicles that still have dead Connect hardware bolted into them.
Getaround Features
- Getaround Connect proprietary in-car hardware for keyless access
- Guest unlock from the Getaround app without a key handoff
- GPS tracking and remote immobilization through Connect
- Marketplace demand, payments, and payouts (US marketplace now closed)
- Bundled insurance and protection during trips
- Gig-driver rental segment via the HyreCar acquisition (also closed)
- European operations continuing in Norway, Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, and Austria
Getaround Pricing
While the US marketplace operated, Getaround took roughly 40% of trip revenue from hosts — the highest commission in US peer-to-peer car sharing. On top of that, hosts paid a one-time Getaround Connect setup fee of about $99 per vehicle covering the device and installation, plus a Connect subscription starting around $20/month for the first car and decreasing as vehicles were added. New hosts received the Connect subscription free for the first 90 days. The subscription was owed whether or not the car rented, which is what made the shutdown expensive: the hardware cost was sunk and the recurring fee bought access to a channel that no longer exists in the US. European pricing continues under the remaining Getaround entities and differs by market.
