Peer-to-peer car sharing · Syracuse
Car sharing in Syracuse and Central New York
Levy is a peer-to-peer car-sharing marketplace for Syracuse and the towns of Onondaga County. Owners list their cars, and drivers rent them for Skaneateles afternoons, Thousand Islands weekends, and the State Fair. Hosts can create draft listings now. Bookings open when the marketplace launches.
In Syracuse, 25.7% of households have no vehicle, according to 2020 to 2024 Census survey data (Census data via Census Reporter). Centro's airport bus runs weekdays from 5 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. with limited weekend service (SYR), so a weekend trip out of the city usually needs a car.
Syracuse University expected about 21,820 students in fall 2025 (SU News), and its 2027 Commencement Weekend is May 8 to 9 (Syracuse University).
For hosts
Central New York has big event weeks. The Great New York State Fair runs for 13 days at the end of summer, August 25 to September 6 in 2027 (NYS Fair), and SU football and basketball play at the JMA Wireless Dome, which holds nearly 50,000 (Visit Syracuse). You choose which of those weekends your car is available.
The region is also growing. Micron broke ground on January 16, 2026 on a semiconductor campus in Clay, and the state projects 9,000 direct jobs (Governor's office). Someone who has just moved for a new job may need a car before buying one.

Rules change. Check the linked official sources before a trip.
Snow, and a lot of it
Normal annual snowfall at the airport is 127.8 inches (NOAA normals). Syracuse got 172.9 inches in 2025, including a record 24.2 inches on December 30 (National Weather Service). Lake-effect bands off Lake Ontario can drop 2 to 3 inches an hour (NWS).
The I-81 Viaduct Project
The state is removing the 1.4-mile elevated highway by downtown. Existing I-481 becomes the new I-81, and the old route becomes Business Loop 81; NYSDOT puts construction at about six years (NYSDOT). Federal approval of the new I-81 came on September 22, 2026, and the state says drivers should not expect immediate changes (Governor's office).
Odd/even street parking
Citywide, cars park on the odd-numbered side from 6 p.m. on an odd day to 6 p.m. on an even day, then switch. Meters run 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the central business district bans parking from midnight to 7 a.m. (City of Syracuse).
Thruway tolls by mail
The Thruway through Syracuse is cashless. Without E-ZPass, cameras record the plate and a bill arrives 30 to 45 days after the trip (Thruway). Levy matches tolls to trips automatically, so hosts are not chasing those bills.

When the marketplace launches. Hosts can create draft listings now; sign up and we will email you.
How does Syracuse odd/even parking affect a shared car?
Cars switch sides at 6 p.m. Hosts who park on the street can set return times before the switch, and drivers should check which side is legal when they park.
Will I-81 construction affect my trip?
Possibly, near downtown. The old viaduct is being replaced and I-481 is becoming the new I-81. The state says drivers should not expect immediate changes, but SU has told game-day fans to allow extra time for construction.
How much snow should I plan for in Syracuse?
The normal is 127.8 inches a year, and 2025 brought 172.9. Look for cars with winter equipment.
Can I pick up a car near the Syracuse Amtrak station?
If a host near the Walsh RTC offers it.
What should I know about parking on SU game days?
For the 2026 football opener, all campus parking was cashless, with garages at $40 and a shuttle lot at $35 (SU Parking). Leave extra time for traffic.
