Vehicle Lifecycle & Durability
Understanding the expected lifespan, battery performance, warranty coverage, and real-world durability of fleet scooters helps you plan your operation and forecast costs. This guide covers what to expect from your vehicles over their service life.
Expected Lifespan
Rental-grade scooters used on the Levy Fleets platform are designed for commercial use and are significantly more durable than consumer models.
Typical Service Life
| Metric | Expected Range |
|---|---|
| Seasons of use | 3-4 seasons |
| Ride-miles | 5,000+ miles |
| Charging cycles | 2,000+ cycles before range diminishes |
Your Results Will Vary
Actual lifespan depends heavily on usage intensity, maintenance habits, climate, and operating conditions. Fleets in high-traffic tourist areas with heavy daily use will see more wear than seasonal operations with moderate use. Regular maintenance (see below) significantly extends vehicle life.
What Determines Lifespan
The main factors that affect how long a scooter lasts in fleet service:
- Usage intensity — How many rides per day, average ride length, and rider behavior
- Maintenance — Regular checks and timely repairs extend life dramatically
- Climate — Extreme heat, cold, rain, and salt exposure accelerate wear
- Storage — Proper off-season storage preserves battery health and components
- Terrain — Flat paved surfaces are easiest on vehicles; rough terrain increases wear
Battery Performance
Charging Cycles
Scooter batteries are rated for 2,000+ charging cycles before range starts to noticeably diminish. A charging cycle is one full charge from low to full.
In practical terms, if you charge each scooter once per day during a 6-month season, that's roughly 180 cycles per year — meaning the battery should maintain good range for 10+ seasons of typical use before significant degradation.
Battery Tips
- Don't store at 0% — If storing scooters for the off-season, charge to 50-60% first
- Avoid extreme temperatures — Store in a cool, dry location when not in use
- Charge regularly — Batteries degrade faster if left fully depleted for extended periods
For detailed storage guidance, see the Storage Suggestions guide.
Manufacturer Warranty
Coverage Period
Scooter manufacturers typically provide a 90-day warranty on new vehicles. This warranty is intended to cover defects that are present at the time of manufacture.
What's Covered
| Covered | Not Covered |
|---|---|
| Electronic malfunctions / defects | Normal wear and tear |
| Manufacturing defects in frame or components | Damage from rider misuse or accidents |
| Faulty wiring or controller issues | Vandalism or intentional damage |
| Dead-on-arrival components | Cosmetic wear (scratches, scuffs) |
| Defective battery cells | Water damage from improper use |
How Warranty Claims Work
- Identify the issue — Document the defect with photos and a description
- Contact Levy support — Email support@levyelectric.com with the vehicle number and issue details
- Levy coordinates with the manufacturer — We handle the warranty claim on your behalf
- Replacement parts are shipped — For confirmed defects, the manufacturer supplies replacement parts at no cost
- Installation — You install the replacement parts (most are straightforward swaps)
Document Issues Early
If you notice anything unusual with a new scooter, document it immediately — even if it seems minor. Warranty claims are easiest to process when reported promptly within the 90-day window.
Fleet Loss Rates
One of the most common concerns for new operators is vehicle theft and damage. In practice, loss rates are extremely low.
Theft
- Annual theft rate: under 0.5% across the Levy Fleets network
- Most locations experience zero theft
- IoT security features (GPS tracking, remote immobilization, tamper alerts) make theft very difficult and recovery very likely
- See Anti-Theft & Vehicle Security for a full breakdown of security features
Damage
- Damage rarely totals a vehicle — Even significant damage from accidents or vandalism is almost always repairable
- Common damage includes cosmetic issues (scratches, bent fenders), brake cable wear, and tire punctures — all easily fixed
- Even in cases of serious water damage, vehicles are almost always recoverable unless the electronics are completely destroyed
- The most extreme loss scenario (vehicle stolen and thrown into a body of water) is exceedingly rare
Rider Liability
Per the Levy rental agreement, riders are held responsible for theft or damage that occurs during their rental. Levy reserves the right to charge riders up to the full depreciated cost of the vehicle for theft or damage due to negligence or misuse.
Maintenance & Extending Vehicle Life
Regular maintenance is the single biggest factor in extending your fleet's service life. Levy provides detailed maintenance checklists:
- Regular Maintenance Checklist for ES Scooters — Daily, weekly, and periodic checks
- First Batch Setup Checklist — Getting new scooters operational
Key Maintenance Areas
| Component | Check Frequency | Common Issues |
|---|---|---|
| Tires | Daily | Low pressure, punctures, wear |
| Brakes | Daily | Cable stretch, pad wear |
| Battery | Daily | Charge level, charging issues |
| Stem/Folding mechanism | Weekly | Loose bolts, play in joint |
| Lights | Weekly | Burned out LEDs, wiring |
| IoT device | Weekly | Connectivity, firmware |
Preventive > Reactive
A 5-minute daily check prevents most field failures. Catching a low tire or loose bolt before deployment saves you from a rider complaint and a field retrieval trip.
Replacement Parts
When components wear out, replacement parts are available through Levy. Common replacement items include:
- Tires and inner tubes
- Brake cables and pads
- Display panels
- Batteries (internal and external)
- Fenders and body panels
- Throttle assemblies
