Understanding IP Ratings for Fleet Vehicles

IP (Ingress Protection) ratings indicate how well a vehicle is protected against dust and water. For outdoor fleet operations, understanding IP ratings is crucial for vehicle selection and maintenance planning.

How to Read IP Ratings

IP ratings have two digits: the first (0-6) indicates dust protection, the second (0-9) indicates water protection. IP54 means partial dust protection and splash resistance. IP65 means dust-tight and low-pressure water jets. IP67 means dust-tight and submersible.

Recommended IP Ratings for Fleets

For outdoor fleet use, IP54 is minimum acceptable, IP65 is recommended, and IP67 is ideal. Rain, puddles, and outdoor storage all expose vehicles to water. Higher IP ratings reduce weather-related maintenance and downtime.

IP Rating Limitations

IP ratings test new products under controlled conditions. Real-world exposure, drops, and aging can compromise seals. Regular maintenance and inspection remain important regardless of IP rating.

Component-Level Protection

Not all components share the same IP rating. The battery, controller, and motor may have different ratings. Water damage often occurs at connection points, charging ports, or where housing has been stressed.
