SOP - Battery Cannot Be Charged

If a Segway scooter battery refuses to charge despite being connected to the charger, follow this diagnostic procedure.

Step 1: Check the Charger LED

Connect the charger to the scooter and observe the charger LED:

  • Red solid: Battery is charging normally - wait and recheck
  • Green solid: Battery is full or charger cannot charge it (proceed to Step 2)
  • No LED / No response: Check the power outlet and charger cable

Step 2: Check the Battery LED

Open the battery compartment (see Opening the Battery Compartment) and observe the battery module LED:

Refer to the Battery LED Status Table for LED meanings.

  • Red flashing every 1 sec: Battery is over-discharged. Leave charger connected for 2+ hours to attempt recovery.
  • Red solid: Short-circuit protection active. Disconnect all loads and try again after 5 minutes.
  • Both LEDs off: Battery in sleep mode. Connect charger and wait 5-10 minutes.

Step 3: Try a Recovery Charge

For an over-discharged battery:

  1. Connect the charger and leave it connected for at least 2 hours
  2. Check if the LED changes from Red (flashing) to Red/Blue (charging recovery) or Red (every 0.5 sec = charging)
  3. If the LED never changes, the battery cells may be too degraded to recover

Step 4: Check Connections

  1. Inspect the charging port on the scooter for bent or corroded pins
  2. Check the battery wiring connectors inside the compartment
  3. Verify the battery-to-controller connection is secure

Step 5: Test with a Different Charger

Use a known-good charger to rule out a faulty charger.

If None of the Above Works

The battery likely needs to be replaced or serviced. Contact Segway support with:

  • Scooter serial number
  • Battery LED state observed
  • Approximate age and total mileage of the battery
  • Results of the above steps
