About
Locky Dock is New Zealand's leading smart bike parking network, operated by Big Street Bikers and built on Bikeep's proven European micromobility infrastructure. The network provides free, secure parking for bicycles and e-bikes in high-traffic urban locations across the country.
How It Works
Users simply ride up to any Locky Dock station, lock their bike using the app (QR code), contactless payment card, transit card, or any 13.56MHz NFC card, and walk away. The hardened steel locking bar secures both the wheel and frame. When ready to leave, unlock via the same method. The service is completely free โ no charges are applied even when tapping a payment card.
Security
Each dock features a three-layer security system: a hardened galvanized steel locking arm with two-point lock, a 120dB loudspeaker alarm that activates on tampering, and real-time distress signal forwarding to local security personnel. The system has recorded zero thefts across more than 2 million parking sessions globally โ a 99%+ theft prevention rate with only 2 recorded thefts worldwide.
E-Bike Charging
Select stations include grid-powered charging sockets in sealed compartments. Users bring their own charger cable and plug in while parked. Compatible with all standard e-bike chargers. Charging is provided at no cost, powered by Mercury, New Zealand's renewable energy company.
Ad-Funded Model
Locky Docks are funded through integrated double-sided digital advertising screens managed by oOh!media. This means no cost to end users, councils, or ratepayers. The network has committed to 100% fossil fuel-free advertising content โ the first media network in New Zealand with this pledge.
Impact
An independent Sense Partners analysis of 10 Christchurch stations found the network eliminates 250,000 vehicle kilometers annually, abates 58 tonnes of CO2 per year, and delivers $1.7โ$2.3 million in physical benefits. The projected impact at 100 stations: 2.5 million fewer vehicle km per year and 350 tonnes of CO2 offset.
