Insurance Verification
Insurance verification ensures that customers have active auto insurance before renting a vehicle. Levy Fleets integrates with Axle to automatically verify insurance policies, or you can allow customers to enter their policy details manually.
Why Insurance Verification Matters
Car sharing involves higher-value assets than scooters or e-bikes. Verifying that renters have active auto insurance:
- Protects your fleet from uninsured losses
- Reduces your liability exposure
- Meets local regulatory requirements in many jurisdictions
- Builds trust with vehicle owners in shared fleet models
Verification Modes
Insurance verification is configured under Settings → Subaccount → Insurance. Choose one of three modes:
| Mode | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Disabled | No insurance check during check-in. Any customer can rent. |
| Required | Customers must verify insurance before every rental. The check-in flow blocks until verification is complete. |
| Optional | Customers are prompted to verify insurance but can skip it. A damage waiver fee may apply if they skip. |
Default Setting
Insurance verification is disabled by default. Most operators with car sharing plans enable it as required before launching.
Minimum Coverage Requirements
When insurance is required or optional, you can set minimum coverage thresholds. Policies that don't meet these minimums will fail verification.
| Coverage Type | Default Minimum | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Bodily Injury (per person) | $50,000 | Minimum BI coverage per individual |
| Bodily Injury (per accident) | $100,000 | Minimum BI coverage per accident |
| Property Damage | $25,000 | Minimum PD coverage limit |
| Collision | Required | Whether collision coverage must be active |
| Comprehensive | Not required | Whether comprehensive coverage must be active |
| Rental Coverage | Required | Whether the policy must cover rental vehicles |
Adjust these thresholds based on your fleet's value and your local regulatory requirements.
Axle Integration
Axle provides automated insurance verification through a WebView-based flow embedded in the mobile app.
How It Works
Customer Initiates Check-In
During the rental check-in, the insurance verification step presents the Axle verification screen.
Customer Enters Policy Info
The customer enters their insurance carrier and policy number, or scans their insurance card. Axle connects directly to the insurance carrier to verify the policy.
Axle Verifies Coverage
Axle checks the policy status, coverage types, and coverage limits against your configured minimums.
Result Returned
The verification result is returned to Levy Fleets. If the policy meets all requirements, the step completes. If not, the customer is informed of what's missing.
Coverage Types Verified
Axle checks the following coverage types from the customer's policy:
| Code | Coverage Type |
|---|---|
| BI | Bodily Injury (per person and per accident limits) |
| PD | Property Damage |
| COLL | Collision |
| COMP | Comprehensive |
| UMBI | Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist |
Axle Webhook Events
Levy Fleets receives real-time updates from Axle when policy status changes:
| Event | Description |
|---|---|
| ignition.completed | Customer completed the Axle verification flow |
| policy.updated | Policy details were updated by the carrier |
| policy.cancelled | Policy was cancelled |
| policy.expired | Policy has expired |
| account.disconnected | Customer disconnected their Axle account |
Customer Insurance Status
Each customer's insurance status is tracked with these values:
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Verified | Insurance is verified and currently valid |
| Pending | Verification is in progress |
| Failed | Verification failed (insufficient coverage or invalid policy) |
| Expired | The verification or the underlying policy has expired |
| None | Customer has not yet verified insurance |
Verification Expiry
Verified insurance status has a configurable expiry period. After expiry, the customer must re-verify before their next rental.
| Setting | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Verification Expiry | 90 days | How long a successful verification remains valid |
Balancing Convenience and Risk
A 90-day expiry is a good balance — it avoids asking repeat customers to verify every rental while ensuring policies haven't lapsed. For higher-value fleets, consider shortening to 30 days.
Damage Waiver Option
When insurance verification is set to Optional, you can offer a damage waiver as an alternative for customers who don't want to verify their personal insurance.
| Setting | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Waiver Enabled | Off | Offer a paid damage waiver to customers without verified insurance |
| Waiver Daily Rate | $14.99/day | Daily charge for the damage waiver |
When enabled, customers who skip insurance verification see the waiver option with the daily rate. The waiver fee is added to the rental charges.
Manual Insurance Entry
If Allow Manual Insurance Entry is enabled in car sharing settings, customers can type in their policy details instead of using the automated Axle flow. This is useful when:
- The customer's carrier isn't supported by Axle
- The customer has trouble with the automated flow
- You want to reduce friction for trusted repeat customers
Manual entries are flagged in the system so operators can audit them if needed.
Manual Entry Risk
Manual entries aren't verified against the insurance carrier's systems. If you enable this, consider periodically auditing manual entries to confirm policy validity.
